Nets fall to Wizards in OT

WASHINGTON — Once again, the Nets had a sluggish effort on the road.

And, once again, they came away with a loss.

For the third straight game away from Brooklyn, the Nets muddled their way through, this time surrendering a nine-point fourth quarter lead and eventually dropping a 112-108 decision to the Wizards in overtime in front of 17,215 at Verizon Center.

Nene's tip in of a John Wall missed layup with 1.2 seconds left completed a Wizards comeback from down nine with 3:40 to go in regulation, and after Jason Terry's missed 3-pointer at the buzzer, the two teams went to an extra session.

The Wizards then took a 105-101 lead midway through overtime after a jumper by Wall, who finished with 17 points and 14 assists, but the Nets re-took the lead after a jumper by Paul Pierce — his first points of the game — and a 3-pointer by Deron Williams with 2:14 remaining.

But Andray Blatche, much to the delight of his former hometown fans, missed a pair of free throws, and Trevor Ariza went on to hit a 3-pointer with 40.9 seconds left that gave the Wizards the lead for good.

After Joe Johnson missed an open jumper that would have tied the game with 27.9 seconds left, Wall and Bradley Beal, who finished with a game-high 29 points, each knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Wizards (2-3) the win.

With Kevin Garnett, Williams and Pierce all struggling throughout, it had looked as if Brooklyn's bench would be the heroes of the game after it ignited the Nets following a sluggish start to the second half.

After the Nets (2-3) led for the entire first half, the Wizards went on an 18-4 run to open the third quarter and take a 71-62 lead with 4:13 remaining in the third.

But after Johnson scored seven straight points to bring the Nets back into the game, the full bench unit of Shaun Livingston, Terry, Alan Anderson, Blatche and Reggie Evans did the rest.

With that quintet on the floor, the Nets went on a 15-3 run that saw all five players score and was capped by Terry's and-one layup with 8:46 to play to give the Nets an 84-76 lead.

Blatche, playing in front of a hostile crowd after his rocky ending to his career in Washington, had 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes, while Livingston added 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go along with three rebounds and two assists.

The Nets' bench combined to shoot 16-for-29 from the field (55.2 percent), and outscored Washington's bench 47-26.

The Nets were thankful to get the kind of production they did from their second unit on a night when Garnett (2-for-11) and Pierce (1-for-5), who missed morning shootaround because he was sick, couldn't get anything going. Williams didn't do much better, going 5-for-14 from the field to finish with 14 points and three assists.

The Nets jumped out to an early lead behind a typically impressive first quarter from Brook Lopez. The 7-footer opened the game with a bucket and a foul over Marcin Gortat, and scored nine quick points as the Nets leapt out to an 18-6 lead.

Washington was able to quickly get back into the game, however, thanks to some hot shooting from behind the 3-point arc. The Wizards, who came into the game leading the NBA in both 3-pointers made (12.3) and attempted (28.5) per game, went 6-for-8 from behind the arc in the first, including a Wall 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to cut the Nets' lead to 33-27.

The second quarter played out in similar fashion, with the Nets at one point taking a 52-39 lead thanks to a 13-3 run midway through the quarter that began with a back-to-back 3-pointers by Terry and was capped off by a fast-break dunk by Lopez after Andrei Kirilenko stole Al Harrington's inbounds pass and hit Lopez in stride as he was coming down the lane.

But, again, the Wizards were able to claw back into the game, with Ariza hitting a difficult 20-foot pull-up jumper over Garnett to send the Wizards into halftime trailing 58-53.

The Wizards then opened the third quarter with a 12-3 run, taking their first lead of the game with 10:05 remaining in the quarter on a Beal jumper, before a Gortat jumper over Lopez gave the Wizards a 65-60 lead and forced coach Jason Kidd to call time out.

Both teams then went scoreless for over three minutes before Johnson knocked down a jumper with 4:42 to go in the quarter.

Washington's lead eventually grew to as much as nine after a Wall layup, but Johnson scored the next seven points for the Nets before Anderson hit a jumper and Livingston blocked Beal's jumper and then tied the game at 73 with a layup with 0.3 remaining in the third.
