The Garden boos weren't for Andrea Bargnani Sunday night. They were reserved for all the Knicks.
After falling behind by 21 points after one quarter and still reeling in the second period, Carmelo Anthony bricked a 20-footer, then threw a cross-court pass three feet over Bargnani's head out of bounds. The boos rained down.
After being routed for three periods, the Knicks made a big comeback, getting the deficit down to two points before Kevin Love's Timberwolves awoke again and snatched a 109-100 Garden victory to move to 3-0.
The Knicks, who started last season 6-0, fell to 1-2 after a terrible defensive outing and were booed again in the final seconds. They won their first 10 games last season at MSG.
Love finished with 34 points, making 10-of-19 shots and 12-of-15 free throws. He also had 15 rebounds and five assists. Kevin Martin also lit up the Knicks, scoring 30 points. He hit 9-of-12 shots, including his first five from 3-point range.
The Knicks were flat from the beginning and were torched 40-19 in the first quarter and trailed 64-49 at the half as Love notched 18 points.
"That was the difference of the game," coach Mike Woodson said. "You can't dig a hole like that. It's tough to swallow.
"You can't let two guys come in here and get 30 points in our building."
The Knicks comeback officially ended when Love, with Anthony having fallen down, hit an off-balance, 10-foot banker and clapped Spike Lee's hand on his way back downcourt as the Timberwolves grabbed a 106-98 lead with 3 minutes left.
Anthony, shooting 37.5 percent entering the game, finished with 22 points but shot 8-of-21. He did have 18 rebounds but also four turnovers. He led the comeback in the fourth quarter, but quieted down in the final three minutes.
In the first half, Minnesota did whatever it pleased, with Love and the backcourt of Martin and Ricky Rubio.
Minnesota self-destructed early in the fourth and the Knicks closed to 97-92 with 6:27 left after Iman Shumpert intercepted Rubio's weak pass and soared in for a fast-break layup.
The Knicks got as close as 100-98 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Anthony and Shumpert with 4:40 left.
But after Shumpert's 3-pointer, Pablo Prigioni got flagged for a bizarre technical, jumping over the end line to guard the ensuing inbounds. Martin hit the free throw, then bagged a 3-pointer to secure the win for Minnesota.
