Islanders sunk by LA’s three third-period scores

It took all of a couple minutes for Kevin Poulin to watch as a couple small mistakes took all of his built-up good graces and sent them packing.

The Islanders 23-year-old goalie was staring down his first NHL shutout on Thursday night at the Coliseum, but then allowed two bad third-period goals, along with a deflection, to fall to the Kings, 3-2.

There were less than two minutes remaining in the third period when Jake Muzzin took a long wrist shot that deflected off of Tyler Toffoli stick and through the legs of defenseman Thomas Hickey, beating Poulin and absolutely deflating all 13,922 in attendance.

The first mistake for Poulin came 5:34 into the third, when Slava Voynov fired a sharp-angle slap shot from in close that seemed to blow Poulin back into his goal — along with the puck. It cut the Islanders lead to 2-1, and began the nervous sequence that followed.

After Colin McDonald took a bad hit-to-the-head penalty, rookie Tanner Pearson netted his first career goal in his first NHL game to tie the game, 2-2.
The Islanders dropped to 7-10-3, while the Kings went to 12-7-1.

It had looked promising early, as the Islanders played a solid first period that went scoreless, then came out flying in the second, outshooting the Kings, 15-5, and outscoring them, 2-0.

Just 2:44 in, Casey Cizikas won a battle in the corner and brought the puck right to the front of the net. There, he finagled his way free and lifted a backhand over the glove of Ben Scrivens, making it 1-0. Scrivens was playing because starter Jonathan Quick was sent back to Los Angeles on Wednesday after sustaining a "hamstring-quad injury," according to coach Darryl Sutter.

The Isles didn't waste much time tacking on to the lead, as John Tavares had one of those moments that exist as a reminder of why he was nominated for the Hart Trophy last season. Streaking up the right wing, he made a wonderful cross-ice pass through traffic to rookie defenseman Aaron Ness, who one-timed it in for a 2-0 lead.

Doing exactly what coach Jack Capuano wants — having his defensemen "activate" — Ness got first career NHL goal, in his fifth game since being called up from AHL Bridgeport.
