Devils defeat Rangers, 3-2

What happened on the Garden ice Tuesday night was a rarity.

It was Martin Brodeur outplaying Henrik Lundqvist in a regular-season game, giving his Devils a tightly fought 3-2 victory. This was the 37th regular-season meeting between the two outstanding goaltenders, with Lundqvist coming in with a head-to-head record of 24-7-5.

Yet when Dainius Zubrus smacked home a shot from in front of Lundqvist with just 2:55 remaining, Brodeur wound up on the winning end. Although it surely lacked the intensity, the result was similar to the playoff games Brodeur and Lundqvist have played against one another, with the Devils bedrock getting the better of Lundqvist in eight of those 12 matchups.

It was looking bleak for the Rangers midway through the third period, as they were down 2-1. Jaromir Jagr had taken a bad holding penalty, but the Rangers couldn't convert on the power play, and when Jagr was let free from the box, he had an unimpeded breakaway. His backhand shot was stopped by Lundqvist, and the Rangers remained in it.

About five minutes later, Dan Girardi fired a long wrist shot that banked on net off the skate of Devils' young defenseman Adam Larsson, then off the glove of Brodeur and into the net, tying it 2-2. Brodeur, bound for the Hall of Fame, gave Larsson a quick tap on the backside with his stick, it being Larsson's 21st birthday.

The Devils (6-7-5) have taken seven points in their previous four games, with the Rangers (9-9-0) had won six of their previous eight.

After a scoreless first, things finally began to heat up a bit in the second period. The Rangers started the period with 1:31 left on a power play, and although they couldn't score, they began to tilt the ice in their favor. But how quickly that changed, when 6:37 in, Devils forward Ryan Carter tossed a backhand towards the net and it banked off of J.T. Miller's skate and passed Lundqvist to give the Devils a 1-0 lead.

Yet the Rangers didn't let the visitors' good feeling last long. It took them just 18 seconds before Marc Staal blasted a slap shot off the near post and behind Brodeur, tying it 1-1.

From there, the game opened up and both teams had a handful of chances that were snuffed out by Lundqvist and Brodeur. Mats Zuccarello, who had been a pest all night and set up Staal's goal, got into the face of Brodeur, and the Devils franchise netminder gave him a face full of glove. When Zuccarello went back at him, he was eaten up by a headlock from defenseman Marek Zidlicky. Both Zidlicky and Zuccarello went to the box for roughing.

There were no scores on the 4-on-4, yet as the period wound down, it was Carter streaking up ice again, beating Carl Hagelin to a loose puck and then tossing another backhand on net. This one got past a sprawled Girardi and beat Lundqvist weakly through the five-hole, giving the Devils a 2-1 lead with just 46.1 seconds remaining in the period.

Carter's second of the game was also his second of the season.
