Carmelo and Knicks fall again

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Carmelo Anthony started heating up in the fourth quarter after a brutal first three periods and as with this whole sorry season, it was too little, too late.

The Knicks fell to 3-7 as they were outmuscled in the second half and let the Pistons take a 15-point lead en route to a 92-86 victory Tuesday night at The Palace.

Wednesday, the Knicks host the powerful 9-1 Pacers, who knocked out the Knicks in the second round of the playoffs last May. The Knicks have yet to recover.

It was the ninth anniversary of the "Malice at The Palace" brawl and the Knicks didn't show enough fight without Metta World Peace (sore left knee), starting point guard Raymond Felton (hip injury) and center Tyson Chandler (broken leg).

Without them and with Anthony shooting 5-of-15 through three quarters, the Knicks were cooked. Anthony scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to finish with 25 on 8-of-20 shooting.

Greg Monroe sealed it for the Pistons (4-6) with 16 seconds left by hitting two free throws to boost the lead to six. Detroit's big frontcourt of Monroe (16 points), Josh Smith (19) and Andre Drummond hurt the Knicks.

After questioning his team's effort in the previous game against Atlanta, Anthony shot 2-of-12 in the first half with four turnovers. He cut Detroit's lead to 85-80 with 3:50 left in the game on a jumper, but the Knicks couldn't complete the comeback.

Mike Woodson declined to intentionally foul Drummond in the fourth quarter. Drummond is an inept free-throw shooter who was 1-of-5 in the game and is 2-of-12 for the season.

Instead, the Knicks let Drummond hurt them on the glass. After the Knicks cut the deficit to 78-70, Drummond outleaped Andrea Bargnani for an offensive rebound, laid it home and got fouled. He made the rare free throw to bump the lead back to 81-70 with 6:30 left. Drummond then tipped in a miss by Ronald Stuckey, putting the Pistons back up by 13.

Despite their hot start, the Knicks didn't play a lot of defense early and were trailing 26-24 after one period despite shooting 52.6 percent in the quarter.

Amar'e Stoudemire, who left the locker room before the game saying "legs feel fresh, legs feel fresh,'' scored on consecutive monstrous driving dunks to start the second period. With Stoudemire set to sit out Wednesday's game, coach Mike Woodson was ready to exceed his current 10-15 minute restriction. Stoudemire wound up playing an even 15 minutes.

Kenyon Martin, making his season's first start at center, had six rebounds in the first half, but had just one in the second half and finished with five points as he played a season-high 29 minutes.
Beno Udrih started at point guard for the ailing Felton. Udrih had his moments running the team, but missed all three of his shots and finished with four assists and two turnovers.
