Kava captures MiMA luxe outpost on West Side

West Village coffee bar Kava Café has opened its Midtown version at MiMA, Related Cos' luxury rental building on West 42nd Street between Ninth and Tenth avenues.

The new one from founder John Saric, a partner at Ace Hotel, is all about breakfast and lunch — with light dinner fare.

The 1,340-square foot ground floor space, with additional outdoor seating, offers a full-service menu through lunch, with homemade organic juices. Evening cocktails will be overseen by Gates Otsuji, The Standard Hotel's mixologist guru.

Saric partnered with Lara Brumgnach, Kava's chef and pastry chef, at both locations.

The MiMA location features white oak, terrazzo and brass and a lot of vintage, mid-century Danish furniture — and the café's signature Strada espresso machine.

The Smile, a Bond Street favorite, also is expanding. It recently opened Smile To Go at 22 Howard St., between Crosby and Lafayette streets, just two weeks after Smile Newsstand, a newsstand-café inside Shinola, a new flagship store designed by David Rockwell at 177 Franklin St.

Detroit-based Shinola sells its own artisanal line of bikes, watches and other leather goods, along with its original brand shoe-care products.

The newsstand-café opens at 7:30 a.m. and serves coffee, pastries and light fare. The newsstand will sell magazines like Vogue along with HypeBeast, vintage bicycling magazines and a curated selection of books.
