Rising tide lifts Verizon out of West St. HQ

Verizon won't wait for this fall's storm season.

The New York communications giant, which in 2005 announced it was moving 1,500 workers to its new corporate headquarters in lower Manhattan, plans to permanently relocate about 1,100 employees from 140 West St. to Brooklyn by the end of the summer.

The move is partly due to the threat of rising water, according to a story in today's Crain's New York Business.

"Our [building] is in a flood zone," Verizon management wrote to employees in a winter memo. "Our goal is to give you a state-of-the-art facility and avoid having to, again, send you to a temporary work location if and when severe flooding occurs."

Flooding in the 32-story tower from Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy last year forced Verizon to shift employees.

Many relocated workers are call-center employees, according to a Verizon spokesman said. In the wake of Sandy, they were plunked in offices in New York, New Jersey and Westchester County. The downtown building has reopened, but unions said many members have not returned.
