French bliss on East Side

Francophiles are in for a treat: East 61st Street will soon be the new must-see-and-be-seen French row.

La Goulue — the beloved former Upper East Side favorite, which takes its name from a French can-can dancer — has signed a lease to open on East 61st Street, Side Dish has learned.

The restaurant won't get hold of the space for at least a few months, sources told Side Dish, adding that the restaurateur, Jean Denoyer, plans to do a lot of work on the space.

The restaurant was a fixture on the East Side for 37 years — the last 16 years at Madison Avenue at East 65th Street, until it closed in 2009.

For years, it counted Catherine Deneuve and Jacqueline Kennedy as regulars, and in recent years socialites, fashion designers and Hollywood A-listers were usual.

After it closed, Denoyer vowed to reopen within a three- or four-block radius — and he has.

Denoyer, who also owns Brasserie Ruhlmann at 45 Rockefeller Center and Orsay at 1057 Lexington Ave. at East 75th Street, declined to comment.

For a more informal way to get a French fix, foodies will soon be able to flock to Sant Ambroeus, which is opening a street-level café/patisserie at the Loews Regency Hotel, at 540 Park at 61st Street.

The new patisserie will be about 750 square feet, a Loews spokesperson told Side Dish.

It will open in a former "secret" private room off the main dining area and a more informal couch sitting room area — a space that was once reserved for private parties and events.

This is in addition to the Regency's legendary Power Breakfast, which Sant Ambroeus restaurateurs Gherardo Guarducci and Dimitri Pauli will be overseeing — taking over from longtime host Loews CEO Jon Tisch — when it re-opens after renovations this fall.

Loews also recently announced its partnership with the Julien Farel Salon, which will launch a 10,000 square-foot flagship that is also slated to open this fall.

Nearby East 60th Street is also getting French-ified. As Side Dish first reported, Le Bilboquet is moving from E. 63rd to a bigger, better space at 20 E. 60th St. — slated to open next month — and Rotisserie Georgette will launch at 14 E. 60th St. this fall.

Num Pang, an authentic Cambodian sandwich shop, is opening an outpost in the Chelsea Market, Side Dish has learned.

This is the first of eight new tenants for Chelsea Market, which was able to carve out 5700 square feet of space without changing the landmarked exterior now that Amy's Bread relocated its production facility to Long Island City. An Amy's Bread shop remains in the Market.

This is Num Pang's fourth outpost. It will be 551 square feet, said Newmark Grubb Knight Frank Retail broker Jay Gilbert, who represented Num Pang in the deal.

Chelsea Market, owned by Jamestown Properties, received controversial city approval in November to build two office towers on top of the landmarked structure.

The Market, which currently attracts about 120,000 people a week, runs from Ninth to Tenth avenues and from West 15th to West 16th streets. It will soon be competing with Pier 57, one block west, slated to open in 2015.
