Spidey’s welfare web

Does Spider-Man really need a half-billion bucks from hard-working New York taxpayers? Gov. Cuomo thinks so.

This week the governor boasted that the producers of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" have committed to filming in the Empire State in the coming months — thanks to a tax credit of up to 30 percent of production and post-production costs for movies or TV shows filming here.

Specifically, Cuomo cites the "biggest stage footprint" in the history of the state, the creation of 3,500 jobs (plus 11,000 extras) and filming in Brooklyn, Long Island and upstate. That's all well and good, but at a tough time for our budget, should the state really be bribing a preferred few to come here?

Especially when these taxpayer dollars are going to subsidize one of the nation's wealthiest industries — Hollywood?

Wouldn't New York be better off if our politicians focused on cultivating an economic environment conducive to all types of businesses wanting to start here, move here, stay here? Upstate fracking, perhaps?
