Beforehand, Islanders coach Jack Capuano called Thursday night's Coliseum match against the Rangers "just another game."
For the first time in years, it seemed like that sentiment was true. There were no antics, no staged fights, no overwhelming amount of hatred boiling over onto the ice. Instead, both teams played complete games and it ended with the Rangers winning 2-1 in overtime.
The game winner was scored by Marian Gaborik on a 4-on-3 man-advantage just 42 seconds into the extra period. It took the Rangers (12-8-2) winning streak to four games and ended the Islanders (10-12-2) at two.
The whole contest was well played by both sides, showing that tons of goal scoring coupled with tons of fights is not the only equation for good hockey. It was still a physical game, and there were few turnovers and sterling goaltending.
Rick Nash continued his heroics when he tied the game 1-1 with just over five minutes remaining. He redirected a Derek Stepan point shot that got passed Evgeni Nabokov inside the left post, and ruined Nabokov's chance for his second shutout of the season.
The second period was scoreless, but didn't lack in excitement. The Rangers had two power plays, and it seemed on both the Islanders got better looks than the team with the man-advantage. The best shorthanded chance came from Matt Martin near the end of the period, when he had a clear breakaway and was stoned by Henrik Lundqvist.
The Rangers power play had converted at least once during the three-game winning streak (4-for-12) they brought into the Coliseum. The Islanders' penalty kill was in a slump, having killed 5-of-8 in the past two games.
After a rather uneventful opening 10 minutes of the game, the Islanders got things going when the line of Michael Grabner-Marty Reasoner-Colin McDonald had a good shift deep in the zone. When the Rangers tried to clear, defenseman Andrew MacDonald kept the puck in. McDonald then got it behind and tossed a blind pass in front to Grabner, who toe-dragged around Rich Nash and netted a shot over Lundqvist's left shoulder to make it 1-0.
