BELLO MANIA
New Victory Theater, 209 W. 42nd St.; 646-223-3010. Through March 31. Running time: 90 minutes, one intermission.
'we're gonna have some fun, don't worry," Bello Nock assured a young boy's nervous parents as he gently escorted their son to the stage.
They had reason to worry: After all, they'd just seen the renowned clown's 16-year-old daughter, Annaliese, dangling precariously from the high wire.
If there's anything to be learned from "Bello Mania" — written and directed by Nock's wife, Jennifer, and stage managed by another daughter, Amariah — it's that the family that plays together stays together.
By the end of the show, you'll know plenty — probably too much — about Nock's career, which includes starring stints with the Big Apple Circus and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. The show's host, Dave Cox, reels off one achievement after another — Nock's being named by Time magazine as "America's Best Clown" and being the only person in the history of Ringling Bros. to have a production named after him.
Send in the clown — in this case, Bello Nock — because he's a big hit in "Bello Mania," a family-friendly romp.
As tiring as all that self-promotion is to watch, at least Nock — whose signature hairdo looks like a tall stack of wheat — has the talent to back it up.
This seventh-generation circus performer is wonderful fun to watch, whether he's trying to ride a bicycle that keeps falling apart or subjecting a hapless volunteer to a balloon bow-and-arrow comedy sketch. And, at age 44, he's a formidable athlete — just watch him balancing on a chair perched on a high wire, or climbing to the top of a swaying pole that reaches the theater's ceiling.
He's also endearing, frequently wandering into the aisles to high-five every child, and more than a few adults, he can reach. That is, when he's not wielding a leaf blower and showering them with toilet paper.
Granted, "Bello Mania" seems a little self-indulgent at times. But as Ringling likes to say, it's fun for children of all ages.
